A
traditional way to spend the May Day Bank Holiday in Hawkedon is to
enjoy a communal lunch in the village hall. This year, thirty two
villagers made their way over to the Hall, and judging by the level
of noise for a Monday lunch time, people were in good spirits. As
ever, Linda Cawston headed up the kitchen with lots of help from Judy
Wilson and Heather Phillips – the coronation chicken was much
enjoyed but did little to reduce the level of noise in the Hall! The
array of puddings was as spectacular as ever, ensuring blood sugar
levels were raised to adequate levels to cope with the raffle run by
Charles Wilson. Charles somehow makes sure that everyone seems to
win at least one prize. At the end of it all, with our tummies full
and many of us feeling the need for an afternoon nap, many hands made
light work or putting away the chairs and tables.
On
our way out, we walked past the kitchen and observed that, as ever,
the washing-up fairies had silently and unobtrusively done their good
deeds. Occasionally, rumours go round that the fairies do not exist,
and this work is done by the same group of stalwarts who, year-in and
year-out, tirelessly do good deeds for the community. Whichever of
these theories is true, Hawkedon is extremely blessed.
