HAWKEDON JUMBLE SALE

The Jumble Sale brings a mixture of emotion. Prior to the event, there is the fear that there will not be enough to sell, but due to the generosity of the villagers the tables always get filled to overflowing with bric-a-brac, clothes, and books. As the clock strikes two, the adrenaline starts to flow as doors open and enthusiastic buyers flood into the hall – the buyers keen to secure the best bargains, those behind the tables worrying of how they will keep control during the frantic first ten minutes. Towards the end of the sale, when the sellers behind the tables outnumber the buyers, the atmosphere is mellow and friendly.

This year’s sale was notable for the high quality of goods for sale, as evidenced by the fact that there was very little left to tidy away once it was all over. Of course, the purpose of the event is to raise funds for the village hall, and again all the generosity of donors and hard work of those who volunteer paid off; the jumble sale will again be the year’s biggest single fund-raiser to ensure the village hall can be kept in good condition.
