QUIZ NIGHT

On a dark and chilly night we crawled our various ways to the village hall to celebrate the 2017 Annual Quiz Night Festival - which had somehow slipped a few weeks from its normal pre Christmas solstice date. The hall was hung with question marks, as well it might be for those of us over a certain age. We are aware we have no understanding of what young people say to us any more, but when they ask you questions about the lyrics of popular songs, more or less all written after our grand
children were born, then of course we have no hope. The solution is to kidnap or press gang a sentient yoof to join ones team, but they are so thin on the ground these days. What ever happened to Bob a Job Week? Despite all this negativity the crowd was warm and jolly and, as we can bring our own refreshments, ignorant oldies can take comfort from the wine we brought.

Our question master was once again the trusty Ian Trapmore, assisted by the lovely Sam. Jane and Steve were responsible for coming up with appropriately challenging questions, and for keeping score. Between them they brought various innovations such as "Name that Advertising Tune" which is not as easy as it sounds. Similarly naming the cafe in Coronation Street or the actor who plays Fred or Bill or Ernie in Eastenders. It is obvious the rest of this year will have to be spent in front of the telly if we are to have a winning chance next time.

Fish and chips, the statutory raffle with many prizes (we were glad the huge vat of gherkins went to Thurston End!) and then it was back to the final four rounds of questions. Having resorted to vinous solace during the rounds for young people I cannot be sure which team won, but no matter. I suspect it was the Thurston Enders again, and since this is the second time running we think Putin might somehow be involved.

Many thanks again to Ian and his team: the scorers, the decorators, the furniture removals, the kitchen duty officers, the providers of the raffle prizes and everybody who make this evening a constant success with a lot of friendship and laughter.  Roll on the next one….
